Mason was diagnosed with severe right sided CDH at 22 weeks gestation. He underwent Fetal Surgery and was born premature, just short of 34 weeks, at 5lbs 2oz on 5/25/07. We created this blog to update our friends and family on Mason's progress as well as to give hope to other families expecting babies with CDH.

Mason's Story
Mason was diagnosed at 22 weeks with a severe right sideded CDH (congenital diaphragmatic hernia). This means he had a large hole on the right side of his diaphram that had allowed most of his liver and some intestines to grow where his lungs should have. We were given a grim prognosis with an estimated survival percentage of only 20 - 50% after birth. After much discussion and decision, we elected to have fetal surgery at UCSF in hopes that Mason could have a better chance of surviving. The fetal surgeries were successful and Mason was born just short of 34 weeks at UofM Hospital. He was immediately placed on ECMO. Mason had his repair surgery and had to receive ECMO cannulation directly through the heart, all within the first 24 hours. Mason ended up needing to have 5 surgeries while on ECMO. On day 17 of ECMO we were told that he was beginning to bleed into his brain. Mason was given a permanent trial-off of ECMO on day 18, and much to everyone's surprise, he did great! He needed an additional 4 surgeries to fit his liver and intestines back into his body. He remained on a ventilator for 2 months until he was strong enough to come home. 3 months after coming home, Mason returned to the OR to receive a g-tube and Nissen wrap.
